How does Miles work with my phone?

The Miles Plug includes its own GPS and cellular connectivity. Cellular data is included in your Miles Membership, so the device works without your phone nearby. When you open the app, it uses a small amount of your phone's data to show you trips and alerts.

You can make updates more frequent and location even more accurate by turning on Bluetooth and Location permissions for the Miles app. With those enabled, whenever your phone is near the Plug, the app connects over Bluetooth and relays the location every 5 seconds. In those moments Miles also reads your phone's location, but only to fill in when the Plug's own GPS can't get a fix, so your location stays reliable even if the Plug's signal is weak.

Your privacy stays protected: Miles uses your phone's location only during an active trip, while your phone is in the car. Miles never uses your phone's location in the background when you're away from the car or when the ignition is off.

Miles also uses your phone's location when you ask it to, like finding your car on the map, saving a Place, or requesting roadside help.
